Six persons were injured seriously, and a score to other suffered minor injuries when neo-Nazi students today suddenly turned what seemed like an innocent academic parade into a Hitler-like demonstration.
The parade had begun, presumably, as a memorial to Friedrich Schiller, famous German author and playwright, whose 200th birth anniversary is being observed by many universities this year in Germany and Austria. Police were on the alert, however, knowing that neo-Nazi student organizations were behind the parade.
When the parade reached the center of Vienna, fascist youth marchers broke out with signs proclaiming Nazi slogans. Other youth groups started tearing down the banners, and the police intervened. The parade had been organized by members of the recently-dissolved “Faithful Youth” movement, which was broken up by the government because it was known to have been largely controlled by neo-Nazi organizations.
