The State of Hesse has disbursed $36,900,000 to Nazi victims for indemnification payments since the end of the war, the budget committee of the Hesse Landtag was informed by the head of the Indemnification Agency of the State Government, Counselor of Ministry Oppenheimer.
A balance of more than $164,000,000 will yet be necessary to satisfy Hesse’s obligations under the Indemnification Law, Oppenheimer estimated. Claims totalling $25,000,000 will be satisfied in the course of the 1956 fiscal year, he predicted, with half of the cost devolving upon the Federal Treasury. A total of 98,000 Nazi victims have filed indemnification applications in Hesse, Oppenheimer said, and another 20,000 applications are expected after the long-awaited amendment to the Federal Indemnification Law takes effect.
