Faced with strong Dutch opposition to introduction of the yellow Mogen David for Jews in Holland, the Nazi authorities have started an “educational program” over the Hilversum radio “to explain to the Dutch people” why anti-Jewish measures are necessary.
In its first broadcast on this subject last night the Hilversum radio admitted that the non-Jews in the Netherlands are sabotaging the anti-Jewish orders issued by the Nazi occupational administration. “These orders,” the broadcast said, “have been issued in Holland because as far as the National Socialists are concerned there is no difference between the Jews in Germany and those in other countries. Because of the fact that the anti-Jewish measures introduced hitherto in Holland have been sabotaged, it became necessary to force the Dutch Jews to wear a yellow mark.”
Assuring the Dutch people that there is nothing degrading in Jews wearing yellow Mogen Davids, end that the Netherlanders, therefore, have no ground for protests, the Nazi broadcast stated: “The Star of David is taken by the Jews as a sign signifying their nationality. Many people do not understand it. Jews cannot be Dutch and at the same time remain Jews.”
Newspapers from Holland reaching here today report that Dutch farmers and food stores have been warned not to sell any eggs to Jews working in forced labor camps. Any Jewish laborer in these camps who is found with eggs in his possession will be punished, the Meppeler Courant states.
