The Nazi bludgeon that has been clubbing members of the German-American societies here into the ranks of a Hitlerite phalanx since last May when Victor Ridder was ousted from the presidency of the German-American Conference, swung again yesterday and landed with crushing force upon the head of another prominent leader of that body who was suspected of being lukewarm in his affections for the local Nazi movement.
The victim of the Nazi bludgeon is Dr. Louis A. Ewald, a surgeon, who only a few days ago had been named by the German-American Conference to act as chairman of its political committee.
Announcement of the formation of this committee, the avowed purpose of which is to recommend to the 200,000 members of the conference the proper candidates they should vote for at the coming elections, was made on Sunday. According to the first reports of the committee which comprised eight members, it eschewed any relationship whatever with local or foreign pro-Hitler factions.
The obvious insincerity of this denial of a Nazi taint to the political body was immediately exposed by the Jewish Daily Bulletin which pointed out that at least two of its members are prominently connected with Nazi activities here. One is Dr. Herbert Schnuch, national president of the Friends of New Germany. The second is C. K.
