Threat of boycott is implied in an open letter sent by the German-American Citizens’ League to Rufus G. Dawes, chairman of the board of A Century of Progress, in which a protest is made against attacks on Hitlerism voiced during Jewish Day at the World Fair.
The letter, which also is addressed to Mayor Kelly and to all congressmen resident in Chicago, denounces what it terms “malicious, venomous and wholly unjustified slander and insult against a friendly nation as well as against this outrageous use of a public place by a class of obviously biased publicity seekers with ulterior and condemnable motives to broadcast their mud-slinging tirades.”
Particular exception is taken by the organization by Alexander Kahn’s reference, during the Jewish Day celebration, to “the gangsters who rule Germany,” and to Congressman Dickstein’s appeal for support of the anti-Nazi boycott.
“We expect some clear expression of condemnation and apology unless we infer that German-American citizens are not any more welcome at the Century of Progress,” the letter concludes.
