The only shipping companies in Germany under Jewish control–the Arnold Bernstein and Red Star–were being operated by a Nazi-appointed trustee today while Mr. Bernstein faced trial on charges of breaches of the foreign exchange laws.
Before the trustee was appointed, consent was obtained from creditors, representing chiefly American interests, although the prosecuting attorney explained that such consent was not essential under German law.
No details of the indictment against Mr. Bernstein were published. He remained in prison with two associates. Under the economic treason act he could be sentenced to execution for the crime of which he is accused. It was expected that in any case Mr. Bernstein would be eliminated from further control of the lines.
