A total of 36,736 Jews arrived in the United States by the end of June, 1950, under the Displaced Persons Act of 1948, according to a semi-annual report released by the HIAS today. During the same period the total number of DP immigrants admitted to this country was 163,628.
The report, rendered to the HIAS board of directors by Isaac L. Asofsky, executive director, said that during the operation of the DP Act, HIAS aided in the immigration to this country of 25,816 persons. HIAS representatives also met some 7,200 Jewish immigrants, who landed on these shores on 286 ships and planes. The HIAS shelter served nearly 233,000 meals during the past six months to newly-arrived immigrants.
