With thousands of Jews and Arabs lining the route from the railway station, Haile Selassie, fugitive emperor of Ethiopia, and his entourage of forty-six were brought to the King David Hotel today by Arab drivers who received special permission from the Arab Strike Committee to break the general strike.
The emperor received an ovation on his arrival at the railway station from Haifa, where earlier he had disembarked from the British cruiser Enterprise. Mayor Hussein el Khalidi and a representative of High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope were on hand at the station to greet him.
The Negus was brought from Haifa on a guarded special train after he had been met at the port by a guard of honor including the heads of Government departments. The marine band played the Ethiopian national anthem as he disembarked.
The Italian hymn, Giovinezza, was being played aboard the beflagged Italian liner Carnaro in the harbor to celebrate the Fascist occupation of Addis Ababa as the emperor landed after a trip from Jibuti, French Somaliland.
He brought with him more than 100 cases reported to contain gold and fifteen cases of treasury valuables as well as ten tons of other cargo which he took with him when he came in exile to the reputed land of his ancestors.
Acting District Commissioner Gordon greeted Haile Selassie aboard the Enterprise in behalf of the High Commissioner.
