Nepal’s King and Queen and other members of the royal family accorded a warm welcome today to President Zalman Shazar of Israel and Mrs. Shazar, at the Gauchar Airport in Katmandu. The President and Mrs. Shazar arrived here from Calcutta on a one-week state visit.

In his welcome, King Mahendra said Nepal had always had feelings of friendship and good will for Israel and its people. President Shazar replied that Israel was at one with Nepal in Nepal’s desire to see the whole world firmly based on the principles of peace and international friendship.

Diplomats of Communist China and Pakistan were not present, but India was represented by a charge d’affaires. The three countries do not recognize Israel. India’s Foreign Minister Swaran Singh reaffirmed in Parliament today that his country intends to continue its refusal to extend diplomatic recognition to Israel.
