A new clash broke out on Israel’s border south of Lake Huleh today when Syrian posts opened fire on Jewish farm workers in the fields. Though the rifle and machine gun fire from both sides was heavy for a time, there were no casualties reported. This was the first incident of violence on this sector in several months.
When Syrian gunfire pinned down a group of Israeli farmers operating alongside a tractor, a covering unit of Israeli border police used smoke bombs to blanket the area and, under cover of a thick fog of smoke, evacuated the civilians.
It is anticipated that work will continue tomorrow on the reclamation project now under way. A United Nations truce observer investigation of the incident is expected to be completed by then.
