The official Gazette has published a decree authorizing the Minister of Justice to revoke residential permits held by aliens and empowering him to use his own discretion in making arrests and internments.
Restrictions imposed by the new laws regarding the rights of aliens in commerce and industry in Belgium have greatly affected the Jewish population. Many Jews who until re-cently were wealthy are now in need of support. Discreet relief is being extended to them by a special charity committee organized by the two largest Jewish social relief organizations in Belgium. The Jewish population is asked in an appeal issued by the committee to contribute generously. The appeal is supported by the Chief Rabbi of Belgium.
A Parliamentary bloc representing the Belgian middle class decided at a conference, attended by the Minister of Economy, to ask the Government to prohibit aliens from opening new business enterprises. Marius Renard, Socialist Senator of Brussels who was elected in a Jewish district, petitioned the Government to set up a special regime for aliens, warning of grave economic and other incidents unless the measure is taken.
