Under Secretary of Labor L.H. Silberman announced yesterday more than $1 million in new contracts to Jewish agencies to hire and train 344 disadvantaged persons in the Metropolitan New York area. He said the US Department of Labor will provide $1,008,962 in funds under the Job Opportunities in the Business Sector (JOBS) program to nine Jewish groups effective July 1. Silberman announced the new JOBS contracts in a speech before the Council of Jewish Manpower Associations here.
In accepting a plaque from the Council on behalf of President Nixon, the Under Secretary praised the President’s record in “recognizing the special needs of America’s Jewish community.” The Council of Jewish Manpower Associations is comprised of 23 groups serving more than 350,000 Jews in Metropolitan New York. It expressed “appreciation, gratitude and indebtedness” for the Federal assistance provided “for multi-faceted manpower programs for the Jewish community.”
In addition to the contracts announced by Silberman, 13 Council affiliates presently hold $3,274,665 in JOBS contracts that offer Job opportunities for 1052 disadvantaged persons. Over the past three years, the Under Secretary reported, the Labor Department has provided $18,396,786 in manpower funds to Jewish agencies to provide training and jobs for disadvantaged persons in the Metropolitan New York area. This includes the new JOBS contracts.
