An appropriation of $1,600,000 to carry on the work of the B’nai B’rith during the next five years was recommended by Dr. I. M. Rubinow, international secretary, in his report to the quinquennial convention. He declared that $1,500,000 had been spent for cultural, religious and philanthropic work in the last five years.
Of this sum $35,000 was devoted to emergency relief. Dr. Rubinow’s report pointed out that since the last quinquennial convention the Order had gained 53 lodges bringing the total number to 602. The 53 new lodges have a membership of 34,151.
In the new budget proposed by Dr. Rubinow are included provisions of $750,000 for the Hillel Foundation, collegiate Jewish campus organization, of which there are now eight chapters, $150,000 for the Anti-Defamation League, $100,000 for Aleph Zadek Aleph junior order, and $250,000 for work with immigrant Jews in Mexico.
Other reports presented were by Maurice Rosenberg of Washington and Sidney Kusworm of Dayton, O., on Americanization, Sigmund Livingston of Chicago on the Anti-Defamation League and Henry Monsky of Omaha on the Wider Scope Committee. Archibald Marx of New Orleans and J. L. Weinberger told of the work in Mexico City, Samuel Beber of Omaha described the work of the Aleph Zadek Aleph and Dr. Louis L. Mann of Chicago reported on the Hillel Foundation.
An illustrated talk on the B’nai B’rith work was given by Lucius Solomon of San Francisco at the Wise Center and teams representing the Hillel Foundation and the Aleph Zadek Aleph debated on the question “We View with Alarm the Present Status of American Jewish Youth.”
