A new foundation has been established in Germany to promote historical research into the Holocaust.

The foundation was established some 10 days before the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps by Soviet troops on Jan. 27, 1945.

The foundation is named after Fritz Bauer, the chief prosecutor in the Auschwitz trials, which were held in Frankfurt from December 1963 until August 1965.

Six of the accused war criminals brought before the Frankfurt courtroom were given life sentences during those trials.

The new foundation has already set aside nearly $400,000 for the construction of an international college devoted to Holocaust studies.

The Fritz Bauer Foundation was described here as the first institution in Germany specifically designated to “learn the lessons of the past.

Michel Friedman, chairman of the Jewish community in Frankfurt, expressed the hope that other organizations will help finance the new college.
