Michel Debre, Minister of Justice in the new de Gaulle cabinet, was reported here today to be a Jew who is very active in Jewish communal activities. He was said to be a grandson of Dr. H. Schwartz, chief rabbi of Strassbourg.
M. Debre’s wife is also active in Jewish affairs, and is a contributor to “Evidence,” the publication of the American Jewish Committee in Paris, for which she writes on Jewish subjects. M. Debre fought with the French Resistance during World War II. When de Gaulle formed his provisional government after the war, M. Debre served with the General as a legal expert.
