The dispute between the Jews and the Arabs in Jerusalem over the question of whether a Jew or an Arab should be mayor of the city can be settled only by the new High Commissioner, Viscount Gort, who is expected to arrive any day, it was announced here by J.V.M. Shaw, Chief Secretary of the Palestine Government, at a press conference attended by Jewish and Arab newspapermen.
In connection with the Arab opposition to the appointment of a Jewish mayor of Jerusalem, it was pointed out in Jewish circles today that a verbal understanding was reached between Jewish leaders and the former High Commissioner of Palestine under which the Palestine administration was supposed to appoint a Jewish mayor following the termination of the term of Arab mayor Mustapha Bey Khalidi whose sudden death precipitated the mayoralty issue. Until this issue is settled, Daniel Auster, the Jewish vice-mayor of Jerusalem is Acting Mayor.
