Citizens’ identification cards will no longer carry a description of the bearer’s religion, according to a decision of the Turkish Government announced today.
Identification of bearers of the compulsory identification cards by their religion had long been protested as discriminatory and undemocratic, particularly by the sole Jewish member of the Turkish Parliament, Solomon Adatto, a member of the Democratic Party.
According to reports from Ankara, the government has appointed a legal commission to review all Turkish legislation and make recommendations to bring it into accord with the spirit of the United Nations Genocide Convention.
