A Provisional Intergovernmental Committee for the Movement of Migrants from Europe started work here today and will take over the activities of the International Refugee Organization early in 1952.
The new organization came into being as a result of a resolution adopted here yesterday at the migration conference attended by representatives of 23 nations. The International Labor Organization will be associated with the work of the new body.
Among the terms of reference of the new agency is assumption of responsibility for chartering “such ships operated under the auspices of the I.R.O. as may be required. ” About 15, 000 displaced Jews still in Europe may come within the perview of the new agency. The cost of their transportation from Europe to overseas destinations, including Israel, would be covered by this agency, should it interpret its functions to include the liquidation of the DP problem.
(The I. R. O. announced in Geneva today that one of its vessels had picked up 61 “hard-core” cases and their families for resettlement in France. Among the refugees are Jews from Central Europe who fled to China in the period of 1933-39 to escape Nazi persecution.)
