King George yesterday awarded the titel of Lord Wanlen of cinque Ports to the Marquis of Reading.
The award was occasioned by the retirement of the occasioned by the retirement of the former holder of the title. Earl Beauchamp. The title, which dates back to Saxon times, does not impose any actual duties but gives Lord Reading certain ceremonial privileges and the use of historical castles.
That Lord Reading began his career as a ship’s boy is being retion with the fact that the title suggests the admiralty superivision of the oldest English ports.
