While Jewish leaders abstained for obvious reasons from commenting on the new citizenship laws, decreed yesterday by the Reichstag, the general feeling among Jews here today is that Julius Streicher, Germany’s No. 1 anti-Semite, has won a complete and resounding victory over his opponents as far as the Jewish question is concerned.
The feeling persists here that Jews will be held as hostages in event the anti-Nazi boycott makes further inroads into Germany’s economic system.
Now that the Jewish status has been fixed, it remains to be seen whether individual acts of terrorism against the Jews, concerning which even Hitler found it necessary to comment, will be curbed or whether they will continue as heretofore.
Reports today indicate that the campaign to deprive Jews of food is progressing not only in the provinces, but is reaching into Berlin as well.
Jewish grocers are being refused certain foodstuffs when they seek to obtain these from wholesalers and cooperative marketing societies. Butter and eggs, of which there is an acute shortage in Germany, are systematically being denied Jewish grocers.
Details regulating the status of Jews under the new laws will be sent out this week by Wilhelm Frick, Nazi Minister of the Interior, it was officially announced. Instructions to make effective immediately the laws to protest “the honor of German blood” were already sent out yesterday, the announcement reveals.
The entire German press, including even Propaganda Minister Goebbels’ own newspaper, Der Angriff, today featured Hitler’s orders to Nazi party leaders at a special conference in Nuremberg yesterday following the Reichstag session, instructing them to refrain from individual acts of violence against the Jews.
The press generally hails the new laws relegating Jews to the mediaeval ghetto, and warns them not to make necessary Hitler’s threatened revision. The newspapers point out that these laws give Jews local protection. They also hail them as a stop towards protecting racial purity by law.
Jewish musicians may no longer be employed in hotels, restaurants or other public places owned by “Aryans,” a new order issued today decrees. According to the order, beginning this week Jewish music teachers will also be prohibited from giving private lessons to “Aryans.”
Documentary proof of Jewishness will be required from every patron attending a Jewish cafe in Berlin where a musical program is given, the local authorities announced today. The announcement also declares that “Aryans” will not be permitted to patronize these cafes.
Speaking in Frankfurt-am-Main last night on the Jewish question, Hans Hinkel, Nazi commissar of Jewish cultural affairs, declared that the Jewish Kulturbund, the cultural society to which all Jewish writers, artists and other intellectuals must belong, has over 180,000 members. The Nazi chieftain advised Jews “to honestly return to Judaism” and not to be “Jews only at home and shout ‘Heil Hitler’ in the streets.”
