One hundred and five members of Siah, Israel’s New Left group, demonstrated peacefully outside the Knesset to protest the sentences pronounced on five Siah members by a Ramallah military court last week for staging an illegal demonstration in the West Bank village of Akraba last year.
The demonstrators were accompanied by two MKs, Uri Avneri and Shalom Cohen. They dispersed quietly after a half hour. The five Siah members were originally sentenced to fines of IL 3000 each or six months in jail. The military commander of the Nablus region subsequently reduced the penalty to IL 500 or one month in jail and gave the defendants a week to raise the money.
