On the initiative and appeal of Dr. George E. Leikin, Chief Rabbi of the Volga district in Russia, a new organization is being formed to give aid to the poverty-stricken, war and famine ridden Jews of central Russia. With the liquidation of the Joint Distribution Committee in Russia, there is now no organization to ameliorate the many hardships that the Jewish communities are undergoing in rebuilding their devastated districts; and Dr. Leikin who is here as a representative of these communities has interested the following to form a society to assist them: Joseph Barondess, Reuben Brainin, Herman Bernstein, Jacob Richman, Nathan Isaacs, Rabbi Solomon Goldman and Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver of Cleveland, Dr. N. Mosessohn, D. N. Mossesohn and Philip Frieman.
Dr. Leikin is a man of unusual scholarship. After being ordained a Rabbi at the age of nineteen, he secured doctorate degrees in juris prudence at the Universities of Petrograd and Heidelberg. He later occupied the chair of jurisprudence in the University of Kazan, being the only Jew ever a member of the faculty of that institution.
