The Gaza military government is planning to construct our new residential quarters in the Gaza Strip to further thin out the densely populated refugee camps, it was announced today. Two of the quarters will be built near the town of Gaza and will be incorporated into it. The others will be in Khan Yunis and Raffah. All three areas are thickly populated by refugees and have been the source of terrorist activity and crime. The military government also plans to move Gaza Strip residents on a voluntary basis to better living quarters on the West Bank.
Plans call for Gaza residents who have some savings–teachers, clerks, administrative workers and employes of the United Nations Work and Relief Agency–to build their own homes assisted by loans from the military government. Each flat is estimated to cost $1,200 of which $600 would be in the form of a loan that will become a grant if the families stay in their new homes for at least five years. Since thinning out operations began last year, terrorist activities in the area were greatly reduced and security, health and sanitary services in the refugee camps were improved.
