Israel Ambassador Abba Eban, who will meet with the newly-appointed Secretary of State, Christian Herter, Wednesday for a discussion of recent developments in the Middle East, today sent a letter to Mr. Herter congratulating him on his appointment. The Eban-Herter meeting will be followed a few days later by a meeting of Mr. Eban with C. Douglas Dillon, deputy Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs.
Israel circles in Washington recalled that, both as a member of Congress and as Governor of Massachusetts, Mr. Herter had a record of support for Israel-American friendship, even before he entered the State Department. He is among those who supported economic aid programs for Israel in 1951 and 1952. He also joined with a group of Governors and other American leaders in 1954 in forming the America-Israel Society to promote cultural exchange.
