Jewish refugees taking temporary shelter in Austria have finally been galvanized into speeding up emigration to Israel or other countries. Leaders of the Jewish community in this country have been urging this course without avail for months. It took the October election, with its signs of rising nee Nazism, to end the hesitations of the refugees.
A transport of 360 Jewish refugees left Vienna the first week of November and another 400 departed last week. Four hundred more are planning to leave this week. Most of these emigrants are refugees who had been in Austria for many months, without making up their minds about departing. Two Viennese camps for Jewish refugees–the Rothschild Hospital and the Arzberg School–are now reserved for newcomers and for sick and elderly persons who await rehabilitation. These two camps formerly housed a total of 4,000, but the present population is only 1,600. The Arzberg School will soon be closed as a camp.
