The new Sultan of Morocco, Sidi Mohammed Ben Moulay Arafa, in a proclamation issued at Meknes, has promised reforms in the Moroccan political structure that will raise the status of the Jewish community from second-class to equal subjects, according to reports here from North Africa.
In his proclamation, the Sultan reportedly declared: “All young people of this country, without distinction of race, religion or social origin–with equal personal ability–will be empowered to obtain the same rights and be subject to the same duties.”
The Sultan also decreed that high administrative posts would be open to all Moroccans. In the past, they have been closed to the Jews.
