A new World Council of Christians and Jews is being organized under the sponsorship of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, the conference has announced. Retired Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes, who helped found the American organization, is taking the lead in shaping the new international body.
The State Department has promised to endorse the Council’s application for affiliation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The pledge was made in a letter from Acting Secretary of State Dean Acheson to Justice Hughes.
Justice Hughes defined the purposes of the new international organization as “to advance by educational means justice, amity, understanding and sivic cooperation among the religious cultures of the earth. This organization will encourage research in the social sciences, in the field of human rolations, and to that end will seek cooperation with the universities of every nation.”
