Alfred Foster, secretary of the New York Athletic Club, a major sports group in the country, admitted this week-end that there were no Jews or Negroes on the club’s teams. He insisted that the club had “some Jewish members.”
Mr. Foster’s statement followed a blast at the NYAC in the City Council last week Councilman Earl Brown, a Negro, announced his refusal to attend a Council outing this coming week because it would be held at the Travers Island Beach Club, operated by the NYAC. He pointed out that the club’s track teams do not have Negro or Jewish members, even if they are champions.
