The City Council, by 16 to zero vote, approved yesterday a recommendation that Prof. William E. Knickerbocker be relieved of his position as chairman of the Romance Languages department of City College because of “reprehensible and unworthy conduct,” A sub-committee of the Council found that “the question of his students’ religion was a factor in Knickerbocker’s mind determining whether or not the student should be trusted or treated like a ‘gentleman.'” Four members of the City College faculty had previously ascribed anti-Semitic remarks to him.
