A bill prohibiting discrimination against prospective tenants in city-assisted private housing projects has been unanimously passed by the City Council. The measure must now be approved by the Board of Estimate and Mayor Impellitteri before becoming law.
The bill outlaws discrimination because of race, color, creed, national origin or ancestry for future tenants in any private housing development which is financially assisted by the city. Violations would be punished by a $500 fine. Directly affected by the bill are housing developments which enjoy tax-exemptions or government assistance in obtaining a site.
