The City of New York made it clear today that King Saud of Saudi Arabia, while he is a guest of President Eisenhower, is not a guest of the city. No hospitality whatever was extended by the city to the Arab ruler when he arrived in New York this morning.

More than 100 policemen were assigned to keep crowds away from the pier where the king’s party landed, and a motorcycle escort protected the monarch to the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. However, unprecedented orders were issued by the Police Department to the escort to observe all traffic regulations, including speed limits and traffic lights.

While New York officially ignored King Saud’s arrival, a squadron of Navy destroyers, a 21-gun salute, a military band, and a Marine guard of honor extended the United States Government’s greetings to the Arab ruler. The king will proceed tomorrow to Washington where he will be met at the airport by President Eisenhower.
