Episcopal Christmas masses will be conducted in Congregation Rodeph Sholom here during the same week that Chanukah will be celebrated because the church of the Episcopalians was gutted in a fire, it was announced today.
The Reform congregation opened its facilities to members of the Episcopal Church of St. Matthew and St. Timothy for at least the rest of 1965. The two buildings stand back to back in upper Manhattan. Episcopal Holy Communion services also will be observed in the synagogue while the church congregation is sharing the facilities.
About 400 Episcopalian members of the Episcopal Church received a warm welcome yesterday from the leadership of Temple Rodeph Sholom where temporary quarters were set up to accommodate the church services. The Episcopalian services were held in the Temple’s auditorium. Walter W. Weismann, president of the Rodeph Sholom congregation, greeted the Christian worshipers. He announced that the congregation would make an initial contribution of $1,000 to the fund established to rebuild the church.
