The Jewish population in Greater New York will be unable to obtain kosher meat beginning Friday, October 19, if the strike threatened by the Kosher butchers will go into effect. It was estimated that the kosher butchers in the metropolitan area number 8,000.
Several days ago the Kosher Butchers Organizations in Brooklyn and Harlem convoked meetings at which it was charged that the wholesale prices on Kosher meat have reached unparaleled heights and the owners of the slaughtering houses were responsible for the exorbitant prices. The butchers decided to call a strike. They plan to abstain from purchasing meat and will offer poultry to their customers. A meeting of the kosher butchers in the Bronx held Tuesday at Hunts Point Palace, Southern Bouleyard and 163rd Street, they decided to join the action. From four to five hundred butchers were present. It was predicted that the strike will last about two weeks.
The existence of a meat trust was said by some to be the cause of the high prices.
