Mayor Robert F. Wagner told a street rally in Manhattan’s fur district today that Americans “dare not be silent” about the discriminations against Jews in the Soviet Union.
The Mayor and B’nai B’rith president Label Katz joined in appealing to a luncheon hour gathering of 1,500 persons to support public protests against the religious and cultural oppression practiced by the USSR against Russian Jewry.
More than 5,000 listeners and passersby signed copies of a seven-point petition appealing to Soviet authorities to permit “unrestricted worship and religious instruction, the restoration of Jewish communities abroad, an end to ‘scapegoating’ of Jews for economic crimes, reunion of Jewish families separated by the Nazi holocaust and eradication of anti-Semitism” in the Soviet Union.
