The New York Board of Rabbis called on all of its members today to observe Saturday, September 7, as a special occasion for sermons emphasizing the need for an end to discrimination against Negroes in the United States. The Board is comprised of rabbis belonging to all three branches of organized Jewish congregations here — Orthodox, Conservative and Reform. In its call, the Board declared:
“Having been victims of discrimination for over 20 centuries, Jewish people can sympathize fully with any group that is being discriminated against because of race, color or creed. It is for this reason that the plight of the American negro has always been a basic concern of Jewish people.”
