The New York Board of Rabbis, comprised of 800 Orthodox, Conservative and Reform rabbis in the metropolitan area, offered today to send matzoth to Russian Jewry in time for the next Passover. The Board also proposed an exchange of rabbis between the American Jewish community and the Jewish communities in the Soviet Union.
The matzoth offer and the suggestion of a rabbinical exchange were made by Rabbi Israel Mowshowitz, after the Board re-elected him to the presidency of the body at its 82nd annual meeting today.
“The New York Board of Rabbis,” announced Rabbi Mowshowitz, “is prepared and would welcome the opportunity to provide matzoth to those Jewish communities in the Soviet Union that want them, for distribution through their local synagogues.” As to the rabbinical exchange, he said: “We feel that religious exchanges, like cultural exchanges, would contribute toward an increase in amity and better understanding” between the people of the Soviet Union and those of the U.S.A.
