The New York Board of Rabbis, representing 650 rabbis of Orthodox, Conservative and Reform congregations, has decided to appeal to Mayor Vincent R. Impellitteri to halt the demolition of a synagogue on the Lower East Side for a proposed municipal low rent housing project.
The Board believes that the Sineer and Wilna Synagogue should be spared because it is one of the largest and most strategically placed synagogues in the area. The housing authority, which has offered the congregation a site for a new synagogue in the adjacent Baruch Housing project, is going ahead with its plans to erect nine 16-story buildings on the project site; one of them will be on the site now occupied by the synagogue.
