New York Republicans Urge Exemption of Orthodox Jews from Sunday Law

The New York Young Republican Club today urged the State legislature to enact an amendment to the Sunday closing law which would permit merchants observing a Sabbath on another day of the week to keep their establishments open on Sunday. The law, as it stands now, forces Sabbath-observing Jews to keep their places of business closed on Sundays as well as Saturdays.

E. Virgil Conway, president of the Republican group, called for legislative action at the current session and challenged New York City’s Mayor Robert F. Wagner to “break his long silence on this matter and state his position. “
