A loan of $17.4 million has been made by the New York State Housing Finance Agency to help build the Jewish Institute for Geriatric Care, it was announced today by the Home and Hospital of the Daughters of Israel, which is sponsoring the institute. Contracts for the long-term, low-interest mortgage loan will be signed tomorrow.
The 527-bed facility, to be built in New Hyde Park, adjacent to Long Island Jewish Hospital and Hillside Hospital, is being sponsored under the Nursing Home Companies act and will be the largest geriatric center in the state, officials said. They added that when the Institute is completed in the late spring of 1971, it will be the first inter-related geriatric-psychiatric-medical center of its kind. The programs of the Institute will be coordinated with those of the two hospitals. All three are members of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies under whose “City of Life” building program the Institute is to be built. Additional funds will also be raised from voluntary contributions and foundations. Officials reported that the Institute would serve as a prototype to implement new approaches of care and rehabilitation for aged persons throughout the country. The State Public Health Law provides the basis for the funding program. Administrative responsibility is in the New York State Health Department.
