New York Times columnist William Safire was blackballed from a club for newspaper journalists because of his pro-Israel views, according to the online magazine Slate. Safire had been “blackballed by UPI White House reporter Helen Thomas, who was then the club’s president, when his name came up several years ago,” the magazine said. The reason was that Thomas “didn’t like Safire’s views on the Middle East.”
