New York City will marshal its forces for a traditional harbor reception for the Israeli liner Jerusalem when she steams up the bay Friday on her maiden voyage to this city’s port.
The 10,000-ton fully air-conditioned luxury liner will be hailed by helicopters overhead, fireboats playing streams of water into the sky and all vessels in the harbor tooting their steam whistles in welcome. At the dock, city officials, representatives of the shipping industry and officers of the American-Israeli Shipping Company, U.S. representatives of her owners, Zim Lines of Haifa, will greet Capt. Avner Freudenberg, his crew and his more than 500 passengers.
The steamship, built in German yards as part of Bonn’s reparations payment to Israel, will carry 541 passengers when she leaves New York for her home port Monday. Four hundred of them will be members of Hadassah on a tenth anniversary pilgrimage to Israel.
