The United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York today honored the people of the Netherlands and Senator Jacob K. Javits for distinguished efforts on behalf of Jewish refugees. B.J. Slingenberg, Dutch Consul-General, and Senator Javits received awards from the UJA at ceremonies in UJA headquarters.
The Dutch people were cited for their courageous efforts to save Jews from the Nazis during the war and for their readiness to accept immigrants now even though their country is over-populated, as well as for their cooperation with agencies of the United Jewish Appeal and the Dutch Jewish community in aiding Jews to emigrate. Senator Javits was cited for his “staunch and unswerving support of the United Jewish Appeal and for his friendship for the people of Israel. Consul-General Slingenberg and Senator Javits received scale replicas of Michelangelo’s Moses as testimonials of the occasion.
