The United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York’s 1950 campaign passed the $30,000,000 mark today as Eddie Cantor, national U.J.A. campaign chairman, received $1,500,000 in cash at a luncheon in his honor attended by one thousand persons at the Hotel Commodore.
Mr. Cantor, who returned last week from Israel, said he was so deeply impressed by the seriousness of the situation there, that he is now devoting most of his own time to the United Jewish Appeal. He indicated that the funds turned over to him would give “a big bcost” to the people of Israel in their struggle to create homes for hundreds of thousands of refugee immigrants.
“The people of Israel,” Mr. Cantor said, “are ready to welcome every Jew who needs a home there, but they will not be able to maintain the present flow of immigration unless we here in the United States realize that there are many thousands of Jewish lives still to be saved and that only our maximum effort and highest devotion can achieve this all-important objective.”
