The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of New York University announced today a new graduate program in Hebrew and Near Eastern studies leading to degrees of Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy.
The new program was planned for scholars and researchers in Hebrew language and culture. A graduate program of Hebrew and Judeo-Arabic courses has been offered in the university school of education since 1944 for prospective teachers and education administrators.
Dr. Abraham I. Katsh, chairman of the university department of Hebrew culture and education, is director of the new graduate program. He said Arabic language courses were part of the program because a knowledge of Arabic is essential for scholars investigating Judeo-Arabic manuscripts of the Middle Ages.
The program includes courses in contemporary Israeli poetry and fiction and a study of the development of modern Israel. The department also sponsors annually a six-week summer workshop in Israel for professors of Hebrew, Bible and Middle Eastern studies.
