Contributions and pledges totaling $200,000 have been received by New York University for the endowment in perpetuity of a chair in Hebrew Culture and Education at the University, it was announced today in advance of a luncheon tomorrow for 100 donors of $1,000 or more for the chair. NYU is seeking $250,000 for the chair.
According to Dr. Abraham I. Katsh, Professor of Education, who holds the chain the endowment would make possible 25 courses in three different curriculums leading to graduate and undergraduate degrees. In what Dr. Katsh said is the first program of its kind, the University would prepare students to teach Hebrew in high schools and colleges, train teachers and supervisors for Jewish nursery and elementary schools, and provide a Jewish cultural background for workers in social service and related fields.
