An agreement to maintain and extend the Department of Judaica of the Jewish National and University Library in Palestine, has been made by Emanuel Hertz of New York to Mrs. Sophie A. Udin. special representative of the library, now in this country. Mr. Hertz’s pledge involves furnishing funds for the upkeep of the physical requirements of the Department, including the rental and salary of the special librarian, as well as additional funds for the yearly expansion of the Department.
The Department of Judaica is the most important branch of the Library which is attached to the Hebrew University at Jerusalem. The shelves of this department already include a collection amounting to 45,000 volumes, among them works of rare interest, such as incunabula, manuscripts, complete files of periodicals of Jewish interest, as well as a comprehensive collection of books on Jewish history. The volumes to be added are expected to make this department the most complete of its kind in the world.
Mr. Hertz, who is the brother of Chief Rabbi Joseph Hertz of England, is a New York attorney who has been interested in the cultural activities in connection with the rebuilding of Palestine for many years and recently contributed a collection of 7,000 volumes to the library.
