The Board of Zim-Shoham Lines decided last night to have both a kosher and a non-kosher kitchen installed in the SS Shalom. Orthodox Jewish leaders in Israel and the United States had strongly protested the possibility. The luxury liner is nearing completion in a French shipyard.

The board acted after the Israel Cabinet ignored a Ministerial committee report opposing the second non-kosher kitchen and voted to leave the decision to the liner’s owners. The directors emphasized that there would be an “absolute and definite” separation between the two kitchens. They also stressed that the decision was based entirely on economic reasons, referring to earlier statements that non-kosher service was needed to enable the liner to compete for general passenger traffic.
