Newark Congregation Sells Synagogue. Sends Proceeds to Israel for New Yeshiva and Synagogue at Etzio

The Etzion bloc of settlements lying between Jerusalem and Hebron will benefit from an all too common occurrence in a large American city. A new synagogue and yeshiva center will be built at the Etzion village of Alon Ahvut with the proceeds from the sale by Congregation Kehilat Israel of Newark, N.J. of its synagogue, only ten years old, it was disclosed by the Israeli Consulate here today.

The Consulate arranged the initial contacts between the Etzion villagers and Sam Stein, president of Congregation Kehilat Israel. The congregation decided to sell its building because of the rapid deterioration of the neighborhood and the flight of most of its members to other areas. But it wanted to perpetuate its name in Israel. Stein and two other lay leaders. Judge Aaron Narol and Arnold Greenspan, visited Jerusalem recently and signed an agreement transferring the major portion of the revenue derived from the sale. Consul Michael Shashar reported. The new synagogue will bear the name of Congregation Kehilat Israel, he said.
