“Liberalism must prevail if civilized standards are to prevail,” declared Rabbi Louis I. Newman of Temple Rodeph Sholom of New York City, in a sermon at the Methodist Episcopal Church of this city, today.
“By the liberal spirit we mean the free, untrammeled approach of the inquiring and critical mind to the problems of the day, whether they be religious, political, economic scientific or philosophical. The only society under which freemen can live happily is motivated by liberalism; any other system means the death of liberty in matters of conscience, social action and research,” Rabbi Newman said.
“Men for the moment consider bread far more important than freedom. But they are rapidly discovering that when they abandon their right of free thought and free decision, they are placing arbitrary power into the hands of tyrants who will use it for selfish rather than democratic ends,” he said.
