“The Nazis will not surrender their power without bloodshed, and the world must not abate its economic pressure until the victory is won,” Rabbi Louis I. Newman last night told members of the Bronx Junior Federation at the Jacob Schiff Center.

“Hitler is certain to appeal to the mob elements in his following, against the baronial-Junker group, and von Papen may feel Hitler’s and Goebbels’ wrath, if they feel themselves strong enough to punish him,” Dr. Newman said. “Moreover, Hitler is not yet ready to abandon his program for an attack upon the peace of Europe, and in his last desperate fling at power, he may adopt bloody tactics that will shock the world even beyond its present sense of outrage. Moreover it may be that the Nazi stormtroops will begin to use against each other the brutal tactics of torture they have inflicted upon helpless minorities since their accession to power. There are many terrible crimes which cry out for revenge, and when once the subterranean forces in Germany are unleashed, the consequences may rival the bloodiest days of the French Revolutionary terror.

“American Jewry must not be duped by present developments. It takes more than one swallow to make a summer, and more than one speech by von Papen to overthrow the Nazis. A decisive and unexpected stroke may rescue Hitler from his present dilemma, and if he overcomes his present difficulties, he may be entrenched for many months or years to come. Any weakening of the boycott by the labor unions, the liberals or the Jews throughout the world would be deplorable. When Schacht discovers that his reckless proposals meet with refusal everywhere, he will cease to play the Nazi game, and withdraw from his post in the Reichsbank. We are still in the midst of the Hitler terror, and we must not be satisfied with half-victories. Only when Hitler and his junta disappear can Europe, the world, and Israel have peace.”
